My Journey from a Personal Trainer to a Fitness Minister

christianminister

I remember when I was a teenager and someone had asked me if I was going to be a pastor like my dad. I recall looking at that particular guy like he had a third eye. I politely responded no, but in my mind I was thinking that there was no way I would every pursue ministry. In fact, the last place I wanted to be on that Sunday morning was church. It was always a check the box kind of experience for me. I would have much rather been outside doing my thing. Playing sports or something at least a...

6 Guiding Principles to Getting a Spiritual Six-Pack

spiritualfitness

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

An untrained mind can accomplish nothing. Just like we go to the gym to build up our physical muscles, we need to spend time daily in prayer and meditation to build up our spiritual muscles.

I spent the majority of my life focusing on my physical health, with complete neglect to my spiritual health. A lesson I have...

It's All about Radical Love

radicallove

What if we were radical lovers of ourselves the way Jesus loves us? It’s really challenging to live our best life when we don’t take care of our physical health the way God wants us to. If you have tried to get healthy and lose weight time and time again without lasting results trying a different approach may be the answer. What if all the choices you made around your physical, emotional and spiritual health were made out of the context of love? How would that change your...

Creating the Habit of Greatness

greatness

Whether we want to admit it or not we are all creatures of habit. The vast majority of us do the same things day after day. We eat the same foods, we think the same thoughts, we drive to work the same way.

Creatures of Habit

Of course that is good in many ways. Thank goodness we don’t have to re-learn how to drive a car every day. We have that habit instilled in us to the point we often times drive somewhere and have no recollection of how we even got there. That’s a little...

Do You Have Faith In Yourself?

believeinyourself1

“Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.  So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26-27

Do you have faith in yourself?  This is a question I have been wrestling with over the last several...

Inner Peace...Where are You?

innerpeace

Why does inner peace seem so elusive? Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like I find it for a period of time and then it mysteriously slips away. And when it does slip away there is little joy in my life.

Worry and Fear Rob our Inner Peace

The two biggest robbers of our inner peace are worry and fear. I worry about trying to make everyone happy and fear rears its ugly head when I fully step into sharing my voice on my entrepreneurial adventure.

I made a commitment to myself that I...

Redefining what it means to be a Superhero

superheroes2

In the traditional sense a superhero is a character in a movie or story who has special powers, such as the ability to fly, that are used for fighting evil or helping people. One of my favorite superheroes growing up was the Incredible Hulk. I identified with him because he was a man of few words and incredible strength and durability. I loved watching him when he hulked out.

I think all of us have identified with a superhero at one point in our life. I think that is made evident with the...

Being Stable in an Unstable World

psalm168

I have been a personal trainer for over 25 years. In the health and fitness industry that makes me kind of ancient. There aren’t too many gray hairs in the fitness industry. I have been a faith-based personal trainer for the last five years. That is when God put it on my heart to not leave the most important part out of the equation of health and fitness, Jesus.

Mobility and Stability

A big part of my personal training philosophy is based around helping my clients with mobility and...

Inspired Leadership

inspire

I love to inspire people. It brings a huge smile to my face. I love to lead. That’s why I started a men’s ministry called Spiritual Warriors Unite at the gym I train out of. It’s a place where men can be real, vulnerable and authentic. To me it’s church. Not everyone is even a Jesus follower in our monthly gathering, but that is exactly what Jesus would want. All comers are welcome. We sit in a circle and we talk about our struggles and the hope we have in Jesus.

We...

Prayer and Faith

prayer

How easy is it to slip back into our old faulty patterns? I have found myself back to trying to run my fitness ministry under my own strength. Do you know where that gets me? Exhausted, stressed out and burnt out.

I am a self-professed professional striver and perfectionist. I seem to be able to step away from those faulty patterns for a period of time, but after a while I find myself striving and being performance based. It never seems to work out.

Complete Dependence on God

How I want to...
